Healthcare associated infections (HAIs) especially those that develop after a surgical procedure should be never events in the healthcare industry. Although the drive in healthcare is to improve patient quality and safety never events still occur. One such never event is the occurrence of a surgical site infection (SSI). By the integration of evidenced-based practice (EBP) interventions healthcare providers can move toward the target of zero SSIs. One such EBP intervention that has been shown to decrease the incidence of SSIs is patient education. Education of the patient and their family of their role in the surgical process can lead to a reduced incidence of SSIs at the study hospital system. The theoretical framework for this quality improvement project will involve the use of three theories; Relationship Based Care (RBC), Kanter's Empowerment Theory, and Knowles Adult Learning Theory. The proposed pilot project examined the impact of structured patient education in the form of videos on the incidence of surgical site infections in the total joint surgical population. Inferential statistics were used to show the relationship of structured patient education compared to surgical site infection rates.
